With its sweeping hook form and strong connection to the sea, Matau is unmistakably of Aotearoa.
Matau means fish hook, an object deeply connected with fishing, sustenance and life from the sea in Māori culture. The form also calls to mind one of Aotearoa's great traditions: Māui using his magical hook to draw the great fish Te Ika-a-Māui, the North Island, from the ocean.
For us in Hawke's Bay, that story has an especially lovely local connection. The great curve of Hawke's Bay is associated with Māui's hook and the name Te Matau-a-Māui, making Matau particularly at home as part of our Land and Sea Collection.
We handcraft each Matau using our own porcelain clay recipe, blended here with New Zealand kaolin. Our own green glaze settles deeply into the sweeping spiral and recessed decoration, while becoming lighter over the raised surfaces to emphasise the sculpted form.
It took almost 40 glaze tests to develop the finish we wanted for these pieces. Choose from the richer forest tones of Dark Green or the softer, earthy Light Green, with natural variations making each firing unique.
Approximately 22 cm tall x 12 cm wide. Supplied ready to hang with a natural-looking synthetic cord, suitable for indoor display or outdoors on a fence or sheltered patio.

International Orders and Bee Products
We send our beeswax candles, wraps, DIY blend, and polishes worldwide and have never had a problem with border restrictions. Generally finished beeswax products are acceptable for import in most countries.
However, in some countries raw beeswax may not to be allowed in order to protect the health of their local bees. We get it. After all, Kev and Dee are beekeepers, first and foremost. On that basis, we opt to make our beeswax blocks and pellets available to New Zealand addresses only.
Some countries may have various border or import charges - please note that you will be responsible for any such charges.
What about packaging? Do you use plastic?
We're committed to eliminating plastic wherever we can - the clear bags our kits are packaged in are NOT plastic. They are genuine cellophane, made from vegetable cellulose and are fully biodegradable and home compostable.
And we're very happy to announce that the black courier bags we use are also NOT plastic! They are made from plants and are fully biodegradable, and home compostable.
Recently we've also introduced coloured courier bags which are made of recycled plastic and these can be re-recycled in your soft plastics.
