DIY Beeswax Wrap Blend - Unpackaged Blocks

$19.00
Choose Your Option

This is a special offer for those who just want to buy bars of the wax blend to make your own wraps, and don't need the sample wrap included in our standard kit.

You have three options when selecting blocks:

Packaged Kit:  Select this option to have each 120 g block packaged individually with a full instruction sheet in a compostable cellophane bag.  Best option if you're giving as a gift.

Unpackaged block with 1 instruction sheet per purchase:  We'll ditch the cellophane bag, and just include one instruction sheet with your purchase, regardless of how many 120 g blocks you choose to buy.   Best option if you want to make multiple wraps yourself.

Unpackaged block only:  We'll send your 120 g blocks with only their protective paper wrap (otherwise they'd stick to everything on the way to you!).  No cellophane bag, no instruction sheet.  Best option if you've been here before, you know what you're doing and don't need more packaging or instructions.

There’s no feeling quite like the achievement of using something you’ve made yourself – and it's so easy for you to make your very own beeswax wraps, using our special beeswax blend.

It’s as simple as selecting your fabric, shaving or grating your wax blend onto the fabric, and infusing the wax blend into the fabric with heat from either an oven or iron.

No special equipment, no measuring, pre-melting or blending required.

And you know the recipe is right, because it’s the same recipe we use on our Dee’s Bees ready-made wraps.  Your DIY beeswax wraps will be every bit as flexible, sticky, durable and hygienic as ours.

There’s enough beeswax blend in a 120 gram block to cover over HALF A METRE of fabric, so you could make:

  • 10 wraps of 20 x 25 cm, or
  • 6 wraps of 30 x 30 cm, or
  • the exact sizes and shapes that will best suit your needs.

Our full colour printed instructions tell you all you need to know to make your wraps using your oven or an iron to infuse the blend into the fabric, plus a bunch of handy tips and care instructions.  And if there’s any question we missed, just pop on over to our facebook page or drop us an email and we’ll be happy to help.

And since they say a picture is worth a thousand words, here’s a short video of Leo making a wrap using the oven method:

A few more things you might want to know:

What’s in the blend?

Pure New Zealand beeswax, damar tree resin and jojoba oil.

I know what’s in the kit, but what else do I need?

  • Pure cotton fabric of your choice
  • Baking paper
  • An oven or iron (your choice of method)
  • Scissors – pinking shears if you have them, but ordinary scissors work just fine as the wax blend will hold the fabric edge together.

Where do I get fabric from?

We have a selection of our most popular fabrics available right here on our site: Pure Cotton Fabrics, and because they're the same fabrics we use, you know they'll work perfectly.

Or any fabric store should have suitable fabrics - look for pure cotton in a quilting or craft weight.

How long does the blend keep?

We chose our ingredients because of their long life – beeswax and tree resin pretty much last forever, and jojoba oil is actually a plant wax rather than an oil with an indefinite shelf life, so it doesn’t go rancid like oils you will see used in other products.  The result:  You can safely store this blend and your wraps long term, so you can make as many or few wraps as you need right now, and the blend will be just as good to make more in a year, or two, or even longer.

Why on earth is it in a plastic bag?

Aha!  Gotcha!  It's actually a genuine cellophane bag made from vegetable cellulose - fully biodegradable and home compostable.   We're always happy to cut down on packaging though, so just let us know in the notes section at checkout if you're happy to go packaging free :)

Delivery Costs and Timelines

New Zealand:

$7 within urban areas, $9 to rural areas.   (2-3 working days after dispatch) Free delivery on orders over $100.

We currently send via Courierpost.

Australia & Rest of World:

Sadly, due to rising costs of international delivery and extended delivery delays, as of 3 November 2020 we have removed our international shipping option.

We hope to resume international deliveries when the situation improves, but for now we believe this is our only option to avoid disappointment to customers.

International Orders and Bee Products

Different countries have different rules around importation of natural products, and it's common for beeswax not to be allowed in order to protect the health of their local bees.  We get it.  After all, Kev and I (Dee) are beekeepers, first and foremost.

HOWEVER, we have very tight biosecurity and good bee health here in New Zealand, and as many of our products are a blend of beeswax, tree resin and other oils, there is no risk they will ever end up being used directly in a beehive, as a block of pure beeswax might.

Therefore we've had no problem with border restrictions, and as at the date of writing this, our products have been sent without problem to Australia, the US, Canada, the UK, and a dozen other countries .

Some countries may have various border or import charges - please note that you will be responsible for any such charges.

Route Shipping Insurance

At checkout you'll see the option to purchase Route shipping insurance on your order.

It's usually a very small cost, and Route is underwritten by Lloyds of London, so you can trust them to pay for a replacement for your order if it is lost for any reason.

We don't think this insurance is really necessary in New Zealand, so feel free to untick if you like, but we highly recommend it for international orders, as these travel via untracked airmail  (tracked is about four times the price!).

What about packaging?  Do you use plastic?

We're committed to eliminating plastic wherever we can - the clear bags our kits are packaged in are NOT plastic.  They are genuine cellophane, made from vegetable cellulose and are fully biodegradable and home compostable.

And we're very happy to announce that the black courier bags we use are also NOT plastic!  They are made from plants (mostly corn I believe), and are fully biodegradable, and home compostable.  And, a little oddly, they smell like fresh toast, or maybe popcorn!

It's not just plastic we're about reducing though - You'll see on our naked DIY blocks you have the option to buy without packaging, and on every one of our ready-made wrap pages we encourage customers to let us know if they don't need individual packaging on the wraps.

Exactly what I was after!

We loved making our own food wraps using the DIY Food wrap kit. The only thing would be that I probably was after more of a stickier result! Works fine, but for how long… we’ll see!

DIY Beeswax Wrap Blend - Unpackaged Block

Loved this product - so much easier thank mixing all the ingredients together myself. However, next time I use it I will melt it in a pot and brush it on the fabric.

Great!

Great value. We have made 4 large and 4 small wraps from half of the block so far. Great instructions. As it is an ice-box in our house at the moment we found the grating method really hard (literally) and so melted and brushed on and then finished in oven. Worked well.
