The strong, graceful lines of harakeke captured in handcrafted porcelain.
This tall porcelain wall piece celebrates harakeke, one of Aotearoa's most recognisable native plants. Long blade-like leaves rise from the base of the design, with two flowering stems reaching above them, all drawn in dark, fluid lines against a warm white glaze.
A deep red glazed border runs along one side, adding a contemporary block of colour and creating a striking contrast with the organic lines of the harakeke.
Harakeke, often called New Zealand flax, is an important and familiar part of the New Zealand landscape. Its long leaves and distinctive flower stalks give this piece a wonderfully vertical quality, making particularly good use of its tall, narrow porcelain form.
We make each piece here in Hawke's Bay using our own porcelain clay recipe, blended with New Zealand kaolin. The botanical decoration is applied by hand and finished with the contrasting red glazed border. Small differences in the glaze and linework are a natural part of the handmade process, so each finished piece has its own character.
Measuring approximately 25 cm high x 11 cm wide, it's an easy piece to display in a narrow wall space, on a column, or as part of a larger collection. It also makes a natural companion to our Nīkau Palms wall art, with the two pieces bringing together contrasting shapes from New Zealand's native plant life.
A hanging point is incorporated into the back, ready for display.

About this design: Harakeke in Flower is an original JS Ceramics design by Jen in Te Puke. After Jen stepped away from ceramics, Bright Side Ceramics, our ceramics brand here at Dee's Bees, acquired the collection so these distinctive New Zealand designs could continue to be made. Today we handcraft it in Hawke's Bay as part of our Land and Sea Collection.
