A little heart with a simple message: aroha.
This handcrafted porcelain heart places the word aroha, the MÄori word for love, between two stylised koru forms in rich red against glossy white porcelain.
Inspired by the unfurling fronds of New Zealand's native ferns, the koru is widely associated with new life, growth and renewal. Here, the two koru frame aroha in a beautifully simple design celebrating love and connection.
We handcraft each heart here in Hawke's Bay using our own porcelain clay recipe, blended with New Zealand kaolin. After glazing, the artwork is applied using a ceramic transfer made from our original design. This isn't a commercially available transfer - it's produced especially for our artwork - before the heart is fired again to permanently fuse the decoration to the glaze.
At approximately 13 cm high x 10 cm wide, it's a lovely little piece for a bedroom, hallway or gallery wall, and a thoughtful gift for someone special. Its simple message also makes it particularly meaningful as a New Zealand gift for friends or family living overseas.
A wire loop is permanently embedded into the back of the porcelain, ready for hanging.

About this design: Aroha & Koru is an original JS Ceramics design by Jen in Te Puke. After Jen stepped away from ceramics, Bright Side Ceramics, our ceramics brand here at Dee's Bees, acquired the collection so these distinctive New Zealand designs could continue to be made. Today we handcraft it in Hawke's Bay as part of our Land and Sea Collection.
