Sunflower Honey beeswax candle

$19.00
Type: Candles

Such a beautiful combination of the honeycomb pattern built by bees, and a bright sunflower (by the way, a great source of pollen for our honey bees) in our bright, pure New Zealand beeswax.

This candle has the look of a rolled honeycomb, but being a solid poured candle means a far longer burn, and more time to enjoy its sweet honey fragrance.

Approximate size:   100 mm height, 50 mm diameter

Estimated burn time:  24 hours

Handmade from 100% pure New Zealand beeswax with a cotton wick. All of our candles are handmade, whether dipped, molded or rolled.  The colour of the wax will vary a little - that bit's down to the bees.   Each candle may also have minor variations - that bit's down to Dee & Kev.  While we aim to be as consistent as possible, we hope you will appreciate each candle for its unique handmade character.

100% Pure Beeswax  We use only 100% pure beeswax produced by New Zealand honeybees.    We purify and clean the wax ourselves, using only water, heat and time with repeated settlings and filtration.  We do not use any bleach or chemicals, and our beeswax retains its natural golden colour and warm honey scent.

Blooming Beautiful  Over time pure beeswax will develop a white dusting called “Bloom”.  This is a natural process which does not affect the burning of the candle.   If you prefer the bright yellow look, bloom can be polished off with a soft cloth, but it will return.   We think it’s a beautiful characteristic of pure beeswax, and really enhances and highlights the designs of our sculpted candles in particular.  Embrace the soft, antique-look of bloom as a hallmark of pure beeswax, just like a good patina on bronze or copper.

Made just for you  (well, sometimes)  We try to keep a few of all of our candles made and ready to be send, but at times of high demand your candles will be made specially for you, which might take a few days.  If your order is urgent, you may wish to give me a call to confirm timelines.

Bee Friendly  We were beekeepers before we were candle makers, and although we retired from beekeeping in 2021, we are still passionate about bee health.   We source our beeswax from beekeeping friends who we know put their bees first and operate in an ethical and sustainable manner.   “Cappings wax” is the freshest wax in the hive, used by the bees to “cap” honey stored in their honeycombs.   During honey extraction this thin layer of wax is sliced off so surplus honey can be spun out, and the honeycombs can then be returned to the bees.   The amount of wax taken with the cappings is only what the bees would discard as they eat the honey.

Pet Friendly and Allergy Friendly The sweet scent of our beeswax is completely natural, infused in the wax by the bees as they store honey in the combs.   Our pure beeswax candles use no essential oils or artificial or added fragrances.

Burn Times and Drip Potential Whether you prefer a classic pillar shape or one of our ornate designs, all of our candles are made to be burned, and we take care to select the best wick for each candle.  Classic pillars and tapers with their smooth round shape are perfect for allowing the flame to consume all the wax, making them less likely to drip and will therefore have the longest burn time.  Asymmetric shapes and ornate designs will drip and be much more variable in their burn.   You can help to minimise this by burning for slightly shorter periods and allowing the candle to cool a little before relighting.    Please ensure all candles are burned on a base that can capture any leaked wax.

Burning Instructions   Trim wick to 6 mm before each lighting.  Ensure candle is on a level surface in a proper holder.  To extinguish the candle without smoking, dip the wick into the wax pool and then stand it back up before the wax cools - this also primes the wick for easy relighting.

Safety  Always burn candle within sight and never leave unattended.  Keep away from draughts, children and pets.  Burn on a level, fireproof surface and keep away from flammable objects.

We will always do our best to send your order out within 2-3 working days, but please note that most of our candles in particular are made to order, which may require a few more days  lead time.  If you need an something in a particularly tight timeline, feel free to drop us an email or give us a call on 06 876 8852 and we'll do our best to help.

International Orders and Bee Products

Different countries have different rules around importation of natural products, and it's common for beeswax not to be allowed in order to protect the health of their local bees.  We get it.  After all, Kev and I (Dee) are beekeepers, first and foremost.

HOWEVER, we have very tight biosecurity and good bee health here in New Zealand, and as many of our products are a blend of beeswax, tree resin and other oils, there is no risk they will ever end up being used directly in a beehive, as a block of pure beeswax might.

Therefore we've had no problem with border restrictions, and as at the date of writing this, our products have been sent without problem to Australia, the US, Canada, the UK, and a dozen other countries .

Some countries may have various border or import charges - please note that you will be responsible for any such charges.

What about packaging?  Do you use plastic?

We're committed to eliminating plastic wherever we can - the clear bags our kits are packaged in are NOT plastic.  They are genuine cellophane, made from vegetable cellulose and are fully biodegradable and home compostable.

And we're very happy to announce that the black courier bags we use are also NOT plastic!  They are made from plants (mostly corn I believe), and are fully biodegradable, and home compostable.  And, a little oddly, they smell like fresh toast, or maybe popcorn!

It's not just plastic we're about reducing though - You'll see on our naked DIY blocks you have the option to buy without packaging, and on every one of our ready-made wrap pages we encourage customers to let us know if they don't need individual packaging on the wraps.

Sunflowers for Ukraine

These candles were excellent and arrived very quickly! I bought them for school as we’re learning about the war in Ukraine. The students loved them and so did other staff members. I’ll definitely be buying more beeswax candles from Dee’s Bees!

Sunflower candle

This beautiful candle was a big hit with the birthday girl. It is lovely to look at and smells divine! Also a bonus that proceeds support the people of Ukraine. Thank you, Dee's Bees.

Smells divine, burns beautifully

I was looking for a natural candle to use like a votive ahead of our upcoming IVF treatment (anything that summons the baby dust right!). The bonus of a sunflower for Ukraine was just perfect. The candle burns so well, high quality wick and no wastage (I tuck the softened edges inwards as it burns, to avoid tunneling and it creates a lovely smooth pool on top when it cools, allowing it to burn down evenly for the next use). Love the tip to dip the wick instead of blowing out as well, works really well.

Candle for Ukraine

A beautiful rich colored manuka bees wax candle. Loved the bee 🐝 attached. Too good to burn. A lovely gift for someone special who likes to have a candle burning to add to the ambience of a room.
